Creatures of habit. . . .
We are creatures of habit. We buy the same latte, the same cereals, the same items off the menu and shop in familiar places. We like to go to environments that make us feel comfortable and we surround ourselves with the same circle of friends and acquaintances. As creatures of habit, we are reluctant to sign-up for the class we've been wanting to take, move from where we've been living or plan a new adventure for ourselves. Over time, our unwillingness to embrace new things puts us in a place of stagnation. We do not want to go forward and yet the spot we stand in is uncomfortable. Many times I'll ask a client why they aren't stepping into the new experience or the new life that awaits them. The answer I receive is that they are going to take the first step, BUT first they need to do this, this, this and that. Once those tasks have been fulfilled or accomplished, then the client will move forward. We all know that once completed we now find ourselves saying we have more things to do before we can move on. Weeks go by, months go by and before you know it a year has come and gone. We seem comfortable and at times complacent with holding off on the joy that can be found from taking one single step. I often say to clients that the journey to a new life, a new relationship, a new career, a new home and a new adventure begins by placing one foot in front of the other. As we take each step, we learn to be at ease with our uncertainties and we allow the joy of the unknown to embrace us. Each step slowly bringing us closer to that which we truly desire.
